Three Goals For Training Camp/Preseason

With training camp about to get started, I wanted to talk about some goals that I would like to see the team make a priority and hopefully accomplish. I believe this year’s training camp is going to be one of the best ones in recent years as the competition should be outstanding. Anyway, here are some goals that I think the Bucs should try to set forth for the preseason coming up.

Find the running game again- The Bucs were one of the worst rushing teams last season after being one of the best in 2015. It’s critical that they find the ground game again in 2017 as it makes everything run much smoother for the offense. The Bucs have capable backs with the likes of Doug Martin, Jacquizz Rodgers, Charles Sims, Jeremy McNichols, and Peyton Barber, they need to find an consistent rhythm early during camp and preseason. This offense is design to run the football and they have the line in place to be a dominant running team, they just need to put it all together. Staying healthy will be key, and personally I would like to see Koetter run it a lot during this pre-season in order to build consistency. If Jameis can utilize the play action passing game effectively then this offense will take the next step forward but it starts with the ground game.

Better efficiency in the redzone-  The Bucs had their struggles in the redzone last season, and it is something that must be better in 2017 if they want to make the playoffs. Higher TD to FG ratio is needed as there were too many times the Bucs were leaving 6 points on the table. Now the new weapons that have been added to the offense should help in this area as it will help spread out the defense providing the offense with more room to operate. Expect the Bucs to make this a priority throughout camp and preseason.

Stay HealthyThis is the most important goal for training camp/preseason as it’s critical for the Bucs to avoid any major injuries to key players. Now I know it’s hard to avoid injuries as they are a part of the game but it would be nice to have everyone available come week 1 against Miami. Making sure the Bucs are doing the little things like stretching, eating right, and taking care of their bodies will help avoid those nagging injuries.

Now I know these points can be said about every team in the league, but these are especially critical for the Bucs this season if they want to take that leap. Again, we can’t predict injuries but we can do the little things to help prevent them so the Bucs need to make that happen. The running game has to be better and hopefully coach Koetter makes it an emphasis in preseason to run the ball often. With Doug Martin out for the first three games, the Bucs need to find an consistency with the other running backs and hopefully can have some success to build their confidence. Finally scoring touchdowns in the redzone is something that I will be looking for during these preseason games as better execution is needed this season. Well that is my goals, feel free to leave comments below or tell us your goals via twitter @realbucstalk.
